An Amaveni maid was sentenced to 280 hours of community service by Kwekwe magistrate Samukhelisiwe Gumbo after she stole her employer’s property as a way of recovering her outstanding salary.

Chipo Madanhire(25) stole two black pants, a skin tight, two dresses and sweets intending  to take revenge on her employer who allegedly refused to pay her April US$50 monthly salary.

The court heard that on the 30th of April 2021 at Amaveni, Madanhire unlawfully and intentionally stole two black pants, one skin tight,  two dresses and sweets  from Kudakwashe Chekai.

In her defence Madanhire told magistrate Gumbo that Chekai did not pay her  when she discovered that she was pregnant. “She got angry and decided not to give me my money and  fired me from work. All that gave me a shock, I chose to steal and permanently deprive of  her clothes and sweets as pay back,” she said.

However, magistrate Gumbo, told her that she had the right to get the money she worked for but stealing was not the correct way to do it.

Chipo Hungwe represented the state.
