Kwekwe City Councillors push for Mkandla elevation

By Staff Reporter

Kwekwe Councillors are pushing for the appointment of Kwekwe City Director of Central Administration Lucia Mkandla to the position of Town Clerk which have been vacant for nearly two years.

Mkandla took over the lofty position in an acting capacity since the departure of Town Clerk Emmanuel Musara a President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s loyalist.

Interviews have since been conducted to fill the vacant position, were Mkandla was also interviewed with five other candidates in the mould of  Law Society of Zimbabwe (LSZ) Executive Secretary Edward Mapara who once served as former chamber secretary for Kwekwe. Other candidates who submitted their CVs are acting finance director for Gweru Owen Masimba, Chitungizwa Housing Director Hazel Sithole one Mr Siziba. The absence of a local government board to look into the appointment of a substantive Council boss have stalled the process.

Councillors at Kwekwe City Council are however, pushing for the elevation of Mkandla to the top post, as they feel the process has taken long and also, “its better to deal with the devil that we know.”

Kwekwe Mayor Angeline Kasipo confirmed the council resolution.

“As councillors we have resolved to have Mkandla appointed to the position of Town Clerk. We feel such a big office cannot stay long without someone in a substantive position. We have worked well with Mkandla and we feel that during the period she is in an acting capacity she has done very well, we therefore, feel she must be elevated to a substantial position. Its better to appoint the devil that we know. We engaged our lawyers in the process, and the adviced us to write to local government ministry and we have since done that. We are therefore, waiting for their response into our request,” Kasipo said.

The exited Town Clerk Musara who thumped in Zanu PF’s internal polls to represent Kwekwe Central in 2018 elections by a cleric and gold magnet Kandross Mugabe.Mugabe went on to lose the seat to Masango Matambanadzo.
