Redcliff municipality has dragged defaulters to court.
90 residents have been dragged the court for ignoring final demand letters to settle their financial obligations within the local authority.
Redcliff Mayor Clayton Masiyatsva speaking in a recent full council meeting said some residents last settled their bills over a decade ago.
“Some of the defaulters had outstanding arrears which dated back to 2008. Given such a state of affairs the council was left with no choice but to take the legal route so as to recover our money,” he said.
Redcliff owes nearby Kwekwe City Council $3 million.
“Some residents have not paid anything to the council for the past 10 years and a council cannot be run in that manner.
“As a council we are aware that the locations constitute of Steelmakers and Zisco workers were people experience hardships of not being paid but we really appreciate if effort is made to settle the bills,” he said.
He further added, “It is sad to end up engaging the law when we are people in a community, however it was above our control as every month Redcliff municipality should pay 50 000 to Kwekwe city council towards water bills.”
