An athlete from Redcliff who was part of the Old Mutual Westgate half marathon which was recently held in the capital is in dire need of sponsorship.

The long distance runner Pedzisayi Gumbo who came 9th in the 10km senior men marathon told Observer Sport that sponsorship will propel him to greater sporting heights.

“I was a participant at the Westgate half marathon 2018 and came 9th in the 10km senior race men,” Gumbo said.
The annual event is organized by the Harare Athletic Board and sponsored by Old Mutual. Categories included 5km, 10km and 21 km half marathon.

Old Mutual Westgate marathon is one of a number of races that are sponsored by Old Mutual that also include among others the Vumba Mountain Run and the Nkulumane Run.

Gumbo is a product of the now defunct Ziscosteel Athletics Club.

Following the closure of Ziscosteel Company sponsored sporting activities were then disbanded.

Ziscosteel discovered the 29 year olds talent when he was still at Batanai (Zisco) High School.

He was then drafted in the club during the school days where he was groomed to be a professional athlete.

The disbandment of Zisco Steel club has seen most athletes of his kind being thrown in a quandary.

Gumbo just like most athletes from the area are now sponsoring themselves to tournaments a situation which is proving difficult due to the country’s economic challenges. Passion for the sport has seen him bagging awards at national level a feat which he said has been achieved because of hard work and dedication to the sport.

“I am appealing for sponsorship from the corporate world for tournaments. I am struggling to have proper sporting kit during tournaments and travelling to tournaments. I am supposed to travel to Bulawayo soon for a Liquer Hub 10 km race and such kinds of tournaments need funding. I need proper training equipment to fully exploit my potentialities on the track,” said the medalist.

Redcliff used to be a jewel for the country’s sporting excellence.

Redcliff used to be the country’s sporting jewel.

There was a firm foundation which was premised on the Zimbabwe Chamber of Mines and a world class infrastructure.

Redcliff went on to churn sporting greats such as Benedict Moyo, Paul Gundani, Olympian track athlete Partson Dzimbiri athletes Cynthia Phiri and Cheneso Jack amongst other renowned athletes.

USA based sprinter Olympian Gabriel Mvumvure is also a product of the mining community.

Recently the place has also produced fine athletes in the mould of Pride Lusinga, Abdu Simbili, Daniel Muzavazi and Connias Mudzingwa who has since joined the Zimbabwe Republic Police.
