New details have emerged in the case of a man from Chirumhanzu who was on Monday night mauled by hyenas while sleeping.
Tinashe Farawo Zimbabwe Parks national Spokeperson said the 87 year old was staying alone at the time of the tragedy.
“An elderly man who was killed by a pack of hyenas in Chirumhanzu (87) was staying alone. He was sleeping in a hut when the unfortunate incident happened,” Farawo explained.
He added that the hyenas dragged the senior citizen for about 300m. Drag marks and hyena tracks were visible.””He was dragged for 300m where he was dumped, with the lower body missing.
Farawo explained that Zim Parks rangers are in the process of tracking down the problem animals.
It has been established that the marauding hyenas are posing a menace to the Chirumhanzu villagers. This is after the carnivorous animals have been praying on livestock, causing serious alarm amongst the villagers.
“In a related incident, 6 beasts have been killed by hyenas in the same area. Zim Parks rangers are on the ground tracking down the problem animals with a view to eliminate the hyenas,” Farawo said.
In recent months they have been an increasing in human wildlife conflicts.
