Former Mayor Kwekwe Mayor Stanford Bonyongwa has raised concern over the mushrooming of churches in residential areas.
Bonyongwa making contributions at the recently held stakeholder engagement with Kwekwe City Council described the situation as appalling.
“The mushrooming of churches in residential areas is a serious cause for concern. We have a situation where everyone who feels like opening a church just do so in their residential areas without following any procedure,” Bonyongwa said.
The last Kwekwe City Executive mayor said the noise from these unregulated churches is causing such a bedlam that authorities must reign in the situation.
“The noise is too much. I am not against the idea of people exercising their right to worship but it must be done in a regulated manner, because currently the situation is appalling,” he said.
Recently there have been a mushrooming of churches within residential areas and some open spaces within the city.
Kwekwe Town Clerk Lucia Mkandla said council was looking into the issue as it was a serious cause for concern.
“The mushrooming of such unregulated activities is a serious cause for concern. We have so far destroyed 5 open air churches as we have been sprucing up our city. This mushrooming of churches everywhere poses a public nuisance. Churches must operate from designated areas,” she said.
