Former Midlands Minister of Provincial Affairs, Jason Machaya has been slapped with a 4 year jail sentence with 18 months suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar offence following the conclusion of his abuse of office trial.
Gweru Provincial Magistrate Charity Maphosa at the close of the State Case yesterday convincted Machaya awaiting sentencing today.
Maphosa said Machaya must serve an effective 18 month jail term though his defence team is still fighting for his freedom.
Machaya’s case has been dragging before the courts for the past two years.
He was being accused of disposing State land following his arrest in January 2018 and was out on ZWL1000 bail.
In August the courts issued a warrant of arrest for Machaya after he absconded court citing poor health conditions.
Machaya was however convicted and imprisoned this week.
