Three councillors from Kwekwe City Council are alleged to have dumped MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa for his political nemesis Thokozani Khupe.
The three it has been gathered are Joshua Tinago Ward 11, Mercy Ranga Ward 4 and Future Titora Ward 2.
MDC Alliance Midlands provincial Spokerperson Takavafira Zhou confirmed to this publication that the three openly and publicly confirmed to have joined MDC-T led by Khupe.
“It is true that three cllrs have joined MDCT and we respect their right to dissociate from us and associate with MDC-T. Every person has that right to dissociate and associate and we wish them good luck in their endeavours,” Zhou said. Zhou described the departure of the three as a non event.
“However, politics is about grassroots support and we are aware that MDC Alliance has a credible grassroots support so much that the departure of the trio has no no political traction. Soon they may regret their move as the ascendancy of MDC Alliance is unstoppable,” he said.
He further explained, “Sooner or later we will convert our popularity into state power. No amount of force, brutality and chicanery can stop an idea whose time is up. Chamisa and MDC Alliance are the real deal in Zimbabwe’s political future.”
The country’s opposition has been battling internecine fights for the control of the party following a Supreme Court ruling which declared Khupe the legitimate leader of MDC-T to set in following party leaders Morgan Tsvangirai’s death in 2018.
Khupe who now has the backing of Douglas Mwonzora and Morgan Komichi have been going hammer and tongs against the defiant Chamisa who is insisting that the ruling does not affect his MDC Alliance.
In retaliation Khupe has since recalled senators, MPs and Councillors aligned to Chamisa.
Meanwhile, there have been reports that Kwekwe Mayor Angeline Kasipo had ditched Chamisa. She dismissed the allegations and declared Chamisa loyalty.
“Those rumours are not true, i have not crossed any floor. I am an MDC Alliance Councillor and my loyalty lies with Chamisa, i am not going anywhere,” Kasipo a Councillor for ward 10 declared.
