Gweru– Zimbabwe Prison and Correctional Service on Thursday launched the Corona virus operation plan as part of the efforts to fight the deadly Covid 19 pandemic within the institution.
Speaking during the official launch, ZPCS Deputy commissioner General, Evidence Gaka expressed gratitude over the intervention by the volunteer service oversee in the fight against the Covid 19 pandemic.
“It is worth noting ladies and gentlemen that the Volunteer Service Oversees (VSO) interventions in the fight against the Covid -19 pandemic have seen ZPCS having a shoulder to lean on which is the VSO.As we gather here let us know that there is a subsisting national plan for the country.
“In this regard apart from being instrumental in mobilizing and providing the material resources to enable attendance and participation in Harare of the ZPCS stakeholders across the administrative provinces involved in the production of the ZPCS Covid 19 operational plan.” added Gaka.
She further said VSO donated hand sanitizers, liquid soaps and test kits to the prisons.
“We would also like to express gratitude to VSO for their hand in the fight against the Covid 19 which includes hand sanitizers, test kits, personal protective equipment among other items that were distributed across the country’s prison institutions.
“Further to that I am glad to learn that the VSO officials have also committed themselves to many future interventions which include the programmers that are meant to capacitate inmates by the training them in the production of soaps and face masks.
“I am told that plans are afoot, by the VSO to buy water storage tanks as well as to refurbish some of the faulty boreholes, This is all being done in an efforts to save lives and improve the welfare of both inmates and the staff through ensuring the provision of clean water thereby enhancing the beneficiaries hygiene and sanitation concerns” she added.
ZPCS also highlighted a number of projects which were conducted for the organisation by VSO saying they have proved to be one of the corner stones of the ZPCS in terms of progress and development.
