Ten people from Kwekwe died and several others injured after a Kombi there were travelling in collided with a bus at a tollgate outside Gweru late Wednesday.
Police sources indicated that everyone who was in the Kombi perished.
All the dead were in the kombi, which has its roof ripped off on impact whilst, the injured were from a Birdgreen bus.
It has been gathered that the Kwekwe bound Kombi was coming from a funeral wake in Masvingo.
It has also been established that most of the deceased were from Redcliff, Rutendo and Torwood in Kwekwe.
In the tragedy it has been gathered that three family members from Rutendo who are believed to be twins and a younger brother also perished on the spot.
Midlands Provincial Spokesperson Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende confirmed the accident though she referred this publication to national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyati.
“I can confirm the accident but for further details I refer you to my national spokesperson,” Mukwende said when contacted for comment.
Meanwhile, efforts to get emerging details from Nyati proved fruitless as his mobile phone went unanswered.
Sources said the driver of the speeding bus was to be blamed for the accident.
“He was just speeding and overtaking even on sharp curves. This accident would have been avoided had the driver exercised caution,” a witness said.
Reports have it that the Commuter Omnibus was part of a convoy coming from a funeral wake in Masvingo.
It has also been gathered that the Kombi belonged to one of Kwekwe’s powerful politicians Zanu PF losing parliamentary candidate Kandross Mugabe.
“The kombi was part of a convoy which was coming from a funeral wake in Masvingo. The kombi belonged to Kandross Mugabe,” a source said.
