Gweru – A Shurugwi man who axed her girlfriend in cold blood Tapiwa Tavaziva Chinyama of Village 4 Beaconkop Farm, Shurugwi was slapped with a 28 year sentence. Chinyama murdered his lover Betserai Shava (37) of the same area after striking her twice on the head with an axe.
Appearing before High Court Judge Justice Mabhikwa, the accused (32) who pleaded guilty was charged with murder as defined in Section 47(1) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9,23.
According to state papers as presented by prosecutor Ndamukaneyi Chikuni, on the 8th of January 2018 around 2000hrs the now deceased Shava in the company of her daughter visited their neighbour Ratidzai Murimi for some counselling with regards to her relationship with the accused.
While Shava was being counselled, the accused arrived at his house and later was invited by the neighbour for counselling together with her girlfriend. After the counselling the deceased left with her daughter while the accused remained with the neighbour. He later followed the now deceased with an axe who he caught up with and started accusing of not talking to him with regards to their matter.
The deceased kept quiet leading to an immediate strike in the head with an axe by Chinyama. The accused repeatedly struck Shava on the head leading to the instant death of the now deceased at the scene.
The neighbour was later notified of the incident by the deceased‘s daughter who reported the matter to the police leading to arrest of the accused. The deceased’s body was taken to United Bulawayo Hospital for post mortem.
According to the exhibit report which was produced in court the deceased suffered severe brain damage.
The accused was sentenced to 28 years imprisonment.
