Gweru- A taxi driver who was trying to jump a fuel queque is accused of running over a couple who was sitting on shop pavements in Central Gweru killing the woman on the spot.
Acting Midlands Provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende confirmed the incident which occurred in the early hours of Sunday.
The driver, George Mbanje (39) is accused of running over Vongai Mapako(43) and Tavawana Chinyoka (age not given) of Tirimuhondo Village under Chief Mapanzure, Zvishavane.
The couple was sitting on the pavement of Jaran Supermarket.
Mapako died on the spot while Chinyoka sustained serious injuries before he was rushed to Gweru Provincial Hospital where he is recovering.
“Police in Gweru are investigating a case of fatal accident which occurred at Jaran Supermarket in Gweru on October 21 around 6am. The suspect who resides in Gweru was in a fuel queque at Sakunda Garage when he lost control of his vehicle and ran over the two.
“Vongai Mapako died on the spot while Tavawana Chinyoka sustained serious injuries and was taken to Gweru provincial hospital for treatment .Mapako’s body was taken to GPH mortuary,” she said.
It is understood after committing the crime Mbanje panicked and fled the scene leaving his Honda fit car behind and was later apprehended by the police.
Meanwhile the suspect is assisting police with investigations and will appear in court soon.
