Kwekwe residents plot machete demo

Kwekwe residents are plotting to stage a demonstration this week against machetes which have become a menace in the gold mining town.

Angry residents have declared that enough is enough.

Making their contributions at Amaveni Police Station residents said they wanted to stage a demonstration to send a message that they are tired of the machete wars.

“As Amaveni residents we are no longer safe, we don’t tolerate the machete wars which have engulfed our city. As residents we must unite to fight this scourge,” a concerned resident Nyasha Ndlovu said.

Another resident Washington Sigudhu said a demonstration is the only way to send a clear message.

“We are inviting all the youths in the society to demonstrate against these machete gangs. We cannot continue to live in fear,” he said.

The police are supporting the demonstration.

Officer Commanding Amaveni Police Station Inspector Maukazuva promised to deal with the problem.

“I am aware of the machete situation in Amaveni. Though I am new to this place I am already strategising on how to deal with the problem,” he said.

Maukazuva added, “I am willing to work with everyone in the community to stop this dangerous situation and I am welcoming your ideas in regards with the solution to end this problem.”

He advised the Amaveni residents to seek permission with the Police District Office.

The demonstration is expected to draw every resident in Kwekwe regardless of scolour and social standing.

Kwekwe has been battling serious machete wars following deadly fights which pitted various machete gangs.

The wars are usually ignited on misunderstandings which might arise from the pits.

The deadly clashes usually spill to the residential areas a situation which has left residents living in fear.

Recently rival machete gangs were engaged in running battles at the intercity bus terminus were a Gokwe man Comment Moyo was hacked to death.

Moyo was the latest victim following many machete related deaths in and around the city.

In Amaveni Bigboy Chuma was left for dead after machete gangs hacked him at a drinking night spot following a misunderstanding.

Meanwhile, Kwekwe Member of Parliament Masango Matambanadzo told parliament that Kwekwe is always sounding death knells because of machetes.
